Heavy monsoon rainfall across western Tamil Nadu has brought localized disruptions and travel hazards to hill districts, claiming the life of a bus driver in the Nilgiris and causing early-morning administrative confusion over school openings in Erode district.

District administrative machinery and emergency response crews were deployed across affected areas on Saturday to handle rain-induced hazards and clear key transit corridors.

Fatal mudslide hits bus in the Nilgiris

In the Nilgiris district, continuous heavy downpours triggered a sudden mudslide that struck a bus on Saturday morning, resulting in the driver's death. Emergency service personnel and local authorities promptly moved to secure the site, clear fallen earth and debris from the damaged road, and manage traffic along the vulnerable hill pass.

State disaster response agencies remain on alert across high-altitude tracts in the region to monitor slope stability and respond to potential weather disruptions.

Misinterpretation triggers school holiday confusion in Erode

Meanwhile in Erode district, targeted safety measures intended for heavy rain zones inadvertently created widespread morning confusion in the city center. While persistent rain affected Thalavadi, Gobichettipalayam, and Sathyamangalam taluks on Saturday morning, skies over Erode city remained clear.

To safeguard students in heavy rainfall zones, the Erode District Collector issued an order closing schools specifically in Thalavadi taluk. However, administrators at several private schools in Erode city and its outskirts misread the notice as applying to the entire district.

Consequently, many private institutions opened as normal on Saturday morning. After school vans had dropped children off and classes were preparing to begin, school managements dispatched emergency text messages around 8:30 a.m. instructing parents to collect their children immediately.

Chief Educational Officer E. Manvizhi clarified that the Collector's holiday notification applied strictly to private schools in Thalavadi taluk, where heavy rain was ongoing. Government schools in Erode city had remained closed under scheduled weekend routines, while educational officials acted quickly to rectify the misunderstanding among private school administrators and restore normal schedules.
