Marco Rubio to visit Mumbai and Jamnagar as India-US trade and energy ties deepen
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio's upcoming trip highlights expanding commercial links and accelerating bilateral trade negotiations.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio will visit India from 18 to 22 October, focusing his itinerary on Mumbai and Jamnagar to expand commercial and energy cooperation between the two nations. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar will meet Rubio in Mumbai on 20 October for high-level bilateral discussions.
Rubio's itinerary follows a visit to Samarkand, Uzbekistan, and marks his second trip to India this year after attending the Quad foreign ministers' meeting in New Delhi in May. The US State Department stated that the visit aims to strengthen the strategic partnership, discuss regional developments, and explore deeper energy collaboration.
Focusing on business and energy
By centering the trip on India's financial capital and Gujarat's energy hub, the visit emphasizes economic engagement. In Jamnagar, Rubio is scheduled to inspect Reliance Industries' refining complex and meet company representatives. US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor confirmed that the trip carries a primary focus on business and commercial investment.
The decision to conduct talks in Mumbai rather than New Delhi prompted domestic political questions regarding diplomatic protocol. Former diplomat Suresh K. Goel noted that official bilateral talks typically take place in the national capital, though he stressed that India remains a central democratic and economic partner for Washington across defence, technology, and professional services.
The Ministry of External Affairs responded by clarifying that hosting visiting foreign dignitaries outside New Delhi is established practice, particularly for engagements tied to commercial sectors and trade investment.
Trade negotiations reach final stage
Rubio's arrival comes as India and the United States finalize significant elements of a bilateral trade arrangement. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar said trade negotiations are now advanced toward a final agreement, while Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal confirmed that the first tranche has been finalized and entered legal drafting. Ambassador Sergio Gor separately stated that the major negotiating items are resolved.
