Helicopter crash kills two Saudi pilots near Yemen border

Two Saudi officers were killed on Sunday when their military helicopter crashed in the Najran region near the border with Yemen, the Saudi-led coalition announced.

The crash of the Ministry of National Guard AH-6i reconnaissance helicopter represents the coalition's first military fatalities since conflict with the Houthi movement flared up again in July following a four-year lull.

Malfunction cited as Houthis claim attack

Coalition spokesman Brigadier General Turki al-Malki said the aircraft was destroyed inside Saudi territory due to a technical malfunction, according to the official Saudi Press Agency.

That account was contradicted by Houthi military spokesman Yahya Saree, who claimed late on Saturday that the rebel group had downed a Saudi military helicopter operating in the same border region.

The contrasting claims come during a sharp escalation in cross-border strikes across the region.

Wave of cross-border attacks and regional response

The Saudi Civil Defence issued potential danger alerts for the capital city of Riyadh as well as the southwestern cities of Abha and Khamis Mushait before declaring that the immediate threat had passed.

Cross-border clashes have intensified since Houthi forces captured strategic territory along the Red Sea coast last month. Recent attacks include strikes on oil installations, maritime vessels, and Riyadh’s international airport, where an attack killed 13 people last week. In response, coalition air raids inside Yemen killed 12 people on Saturday, according to Houthi officials.

In Cairo, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi requested parliamentary authorisation to provide military support for the defence of Saudi Arabia. Egypt’s parliament scheduled an emergency session on Sunday to review the request, with Sisi stating that Cairo's involvement would be strictly defensive.
