India will host its annual International Tourism Mart in Tawang, Arunachal Pradesh, later this month, extending invitations to around 20 countries, including China.

The five-day event, running from 27 October to 1 November, marks the return of the flagship tourism gathering to the sensitive Himalayan border district for the first time since 2013. Organised jointly by the Union Ministry of Tourism and the Arunachal Pradesh government, the mart brings together tour operators, investors, and travel industry stakeholders to pitch the northeastern states to the world.

Yet the venue makes this edition far more than a routine industry showcase. Tawang sits in the eastern sector of the disputed boundary between India and China. Beijing claims Arunachal Pradesh as "Zangnan" or South Tibet, a position New Delhi repeatedly rejects while maintaining the state remains an inalienable and integral part of India.

Why the venue matters

The choice of Tawang arrives weeks after New Delhi took steps to standardise 27 place and feature names in Arunachal Pradesh on official Survey of India maps. The government described that exercise as necessary for accurate recognition and public awareness, following repeated attempts by Beijing to release its own Mandarin designations for locations across the territory.

The area has also witnessed direct military confrontation. In late 2022, Indian and Chinese soldiers clashed along the Line of Actual Control in the Yangtse sector, high above Tawang, leaving troops on both sides injured in fistfights and club brawls before both forces disengaged.

Hosting foreign delegations in Tawang reinforces India's territorial administration through ordinary diplomatic and commercial activity.

Chinese attendance remains open

Whether any Chinese representatives will attend is not yet clear. Invitations have gone out to around 20 participating nations, with formal confirmations expected closer to the opening date.

Official Chinese government representatives have avoided Indian tourism events in the region in recent years. Private tour operators from China, however, have taken part in previous editions, including the 2018 mart held in Agartala, where more than 60 commercial delegates from countries including Australia, Bangladesh, Canada, and France met to negotiate business-to-business contracts.

The 2025 edition of the rotational event took place in Gangtok, Sikkim, drawing delegations from over 19 nations, including Germany, Italy, Thailand, Spain, and Israel.

The programme in Tawang

Union and state ministers are scheduled to attend across the five days. Beyond buyer-seller meetings and investment panels, visiting delegates will tour local landmarks, including the 400-year-old Tawang Monastery, Buddha Park, Panga Teng Tso lake, and Shernup village.

State officials said the gathering aims to showcase the district's Buddhist heritage, Monpa culture, and eco-tourism opportunities. For New Delhi, presenting those attractions to an international audience from Tawang sends an unmistakable message about who governs the territory.

Questions readers are asking

Why is holding the International Tourism Mart in Tawang controversial?

China claims Tawang and the wider state of Arunachal Pradesh as South Tibet (Zangnan). By hosting an international delegation there and inviting China, India underlines its sovereignty and administrative control over the area.

Has China attended this tourism event in the past?

Chinese government officials have generally stayed away from tourism events hosted in India's northeastern states, though Chinese private travel operators attended the 2018 edition in Agartala, Tripura.
