NTPC invites industrial partners to take 26% stake in co-generation projects
The state-owned power producer is offering private firms equity stakes in dedicated plants delivering steam and electricity.

NTPC Limited has invited Expressions of Interest from commercial and industrial companies to acquire a 26 per cent equity stake in co-generation power projects.
The state-owned utility plans to set up joint ventures designed to supply steam and electricity directly to heavy industrial users. The proposed co-generation units will work alongside integrated power supply setups that combine traditional coal generation with solar, wind, and Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS).
What is NTPC offering industrial partners?
By offering a 26 per cent equity stake, NTPC is opening up a cooperative generation model for commercial and industrial consumers. This framework allows heavy power users to buy energy under captive user structures, which can offer lower tariffs and help companies meet sustainability mandates.
In a statement announcing the move, NTPC said the initiative seeks to address the energy requirements of heavy industries through reliable, economical, and sustainable power arrangements, while supporting wider decarbonisation efforts.
The company noted that co-generation allows industrial plants to produce both high-pressure steam and electricity from an integrated system, improving overall thermal and fuel efficiency.
What are NTPC's current capacity and targets?
NTPC currently operates an installed power generation base of more than 91 gigawatts (GW), with over 35 GW of additional capacity currently under active construction. The state-run power company has set an overall corporate target to reach 149 GW of total installed generation capacity by 2032.
Of that 2032 goal, NTPC plans for 60 GW to come directly from renewable energy sources. Its active generating portfolio includes a mix of coal-fired thermal plants, hydro, solar, and wind assets.
Alongside base thermal and green power generation, the utility has expanded into related energy sectors. NTPC has established operations across energy storage, green hydrogen, nuclear power, waste-to-energy facilities, and electric vehicle mobility infrastructure.
