SpaceX has struck a deal to buy a nationwide spectrum portfolio from digital infrastructure specialist Grain Management, preparing for a direct assault on the US mobile market that has sent shares of established telecom giants sliding.

The deal, which requires approval from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), secures up to 14 megahertz of paired spectrum in the 800 MHz band. SpaceX described the acquisition as prime low-band spectrum that resolves a key technical gap, clearing the way for Starlink Mobile to operate as a major US carrier. Chief executive Elon Musk called the agreement a "very big deal" in a post on X.

Wall Street reacted quickly. Shares in AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile all fell in after-hours trading following the announcement on Thursday. SpaceX, which went public in June 2026 and is valued at over $2 trillion, saw its own shares rise 2.5% in extended trading, recovering some of a 4% decline during the regular session.

What is behind the market reaction?

The move signals a sharp shift in strategy. Just last week, T-Mobile, AT&T, and Verizon announced a joint venture to expand coverage in remote areas using satellite-to-phone connectivity—pointedly leaving SpaceX out of the alliance. T-Mobile had also recently removed mentions of Starlink from its promotional materials. Rather than partnering with traditional carriers, SpaceX now appears set to build a competing network of its own.

However, industry experts suggest the aerospace company still faces major hurdles on the ground. Tim Farrar of consulting firm TMF Associates said the deal "adds fuel to the fire" but noted the acquired spectrum is still limited. To achieve reliable building penetration in urban environments, SpaceX would need to deploy its own physical towers on the ground. If approved, the spectrum would eventually allow SpaceX to pair its satellite array with a ground-based network.

What are the regulatory implications?

The acquisition coincides with regulatory shifts in Washington. The FCC recently announced it will vote on a proposal to auction 25 megahertz of spectrum for direct-to-device satellite services. The regulator is also scheduled to vote on 29 October on whether to seek public feedback on opening up an additional 482 megahertz for space-based coverage, a move that could benefit both SpaceX and Amazon's rival satellite project.

Starlink remains the financial engine of SpaceX. The satellite division reported 12 million subscribers globally at the end of June, generating $1.66 billion in operating income from $4.29 billion in revenue during the second quarter. Deutsche Bank analysts, who rate SpaceX stock as a buy, estimate the subscriber base grew to 13.5 million by the end of September, with 4.1 million users in the US.

The profitability of Starlink is vital for SpaceX, as its rocket launch and artificial intelligence divisions are currently operating at a loss. The company is currently pulling back its launch schedule for next year to focus on making its heavy Starship rocket fully reusable, which would allow it to phase out its older Falcon fleet. SpaceX has not yet given a timeline for when its new mobile services will launch.
