What happened in Donetsk

A Ukrainian missile strike on command posts in occupied Donetsk on 26 August killed 20 Russian military officers, making it the single deadliest strike on Russian military staff since the full-scale invasion began.

The casualties included seven colonels, six lieutenant colonels, five majors, a captain and a senior lieutenant. Eighteen died at the scene, while two others died later of their injuries.

All of the men served at the headquarters of Russia's Central Military District or the 41st Combined Arms Army. Despite the heavy losses among senior leadership, Russian authorities made no public mention of military deaths at the time.

Denis Pushilin, the Moscow-installed head of the occupied Donetsk region, posted on Telegram on the evening of the attack that Ukrainian forces had targeted the area near the Donetsk City shopping centre with French-supplied Storm Shadow cruise missiles. He reported that eight civilians had been injured, including two children, but remained silent on military casualties. A reporter for the Russian state-aligned newspaper Izvestia briefly posted online that 10 people had been killed, but the message was quickly deleted.

How the casualties were confirmed

The scale of the loss emerged after independent Russian news outlet Mediazona cross-referenced internal personnel rosters from the Central Military District and the 41st Combined Arms Army against Russia's national inheritance registry and public obituaries.

The leaked rosters, dating to July 2025, listed 856 personnel attached to the Central Military District headquarters and 206 serving at the 41st Combined Arms Army headquarters. By matching names, ranks and dates of birth against probate cases opened over the following month, investigators identified 20 officers killed in the 26 August bombardment.

Among those confirmed dead were Colonel Artyom Berdyugin, 38, chief of intelligence planning for the Central Military District, and Colonel Alexander Kalyanov, 50, head of its special intelligence division. The 41st Army lost its chief of staff for missile troops and artillery, 55-year-old Colonel Vasily Latyshev, alongside its head of operations, Colonel Sergei Laptev, 48.

Unidentified command sites appear to have been targeted across multiple locations in the city. Local Telegram channels reported strikes on a former industrial research facility at 97 Ilyich Avenue and an underground parking garage beneath an unfinished residential complex, which was hit by six missiles. Ukrainian open-source intelligence groups noted that both locations were being used as staff headquarters.

Further officer losses uncovered

The examination of military rosters and probate data revealed two previous instances of heavy staff officer casualties within the 41st Combined Arms Army that had gone unreported by Russian authorities.

On 4 August 2026, eight officers from the 41st Army were killed in a single day, including operational duty officers and unmanned systems specialists. An earlier strike on 8 September 2025 killed four officers attached to the army's communications department.

Mediazona estimates that at least 276,113 Russian service members have died since the start of the full-scale war, based on open-source verification of obituaries and public death notices.
