Police in Thane have deployed multiple dedicated teams and launched an urgent investigation after a 54-year-old local reporter was shot dead outside Ulhasnagar railway station on Wednesday evening.

The victim, identified as Harish Gajwani, was standing near the station complex at around 8:30 pm when three unidentified assailants arrived on a motorcycle. According to police officials, the men fired two rounds directly at Gajwani's head and subsequently used sharp weapons, leaving him dead at the spot before fleeing on their vehicle.

The shooting caused immediate alarm in the railway station complex, prompting local police personnel and emergency units to secure the location and clear the area.

How police are tracking the attackers

Senior commanders from Thane Police, including Additional Commissioner of Police for the East Region Sanjay Jadhav and Deputy Commissioner of Police Zone 4 Sachin Gore, arrived at the crime scene shortly after the attack to direct operations. A forensic unit was brought in to conduct a technical examination of the site and gather evidence.

"Three persons fired two rounds at him and also attacked him with choppers," Gore said. "We have deployed several teams to trace the accused and are examining CCTV footage from the area."

Officers at Vitthalwadi police station registered a First Information Report against the unidentified perpetrators. Detectives are reviewing security cameras positioned around the railway station complex and along major exit routes to trace the motorcycle's movements.

Investigation and background

Preliminary information gathered by police indicates that an old rivalry may have triggered the targeted attack, though investigators emphasised that all potential motives remain under active review while evidence is collated.

Gajwani worked as a news reporter for a YouTube channel, covering local social issues and crime developments across the area. Official police records show he was previously booked in connection with a murder case in 2021.

Law enforcement authorities have reinforced police presence around the transit hub while special squads carry out search operations across the district.
