Kanpur police have launched a murder investigation and arrested two suspects after a 37-year-old man died from severe head injuries when he was dragged 1.5 kilometres on the roof of a speeding car with his hands trapped in its windows.

The victim, Biru Singh Bhadauria, a salesman for a food products company, was returning home from a Dussehra fair on Tuesday night when he was intercepted by a group of men in a vehicle. Police said the attack followed an earlier dispute between Bhadauria and two named individuals, Rajveer and Mewalal.

How the Kanpur car dragging incident unfolded

According to the victim's family, Mewalal arrived in a car accompanied by Rajveer and three other men before stopping Bhadauria and assaulting him. When Bhadauria attempted to flee, the vehicle struck him.

The assailants then forced him onto the roof of the car, pinned both of his hands inside the front windows, and rolled the glass up to trap him. The driver sped away, dragging Bhadauria along the roof for approximately 1.5 kilometres before throwing him onto the road and running over him as they fled the scene.

A local passer-by recognised Bhadauria lying on the road and alerted his family, who rushed him to a private hospital. As his condition deteriorated, medical staff referred him to Hallet Hospital in Kanpur, where doctors declared him dead at around 3 pm on Wednesday.

A post-mortem examination recorded eight distinct injuries across his body, including three severe head wounds, two near his chest, and further injuries to his face, leg, and left hand. Medical experts confirmed that a severe head injury was the cause of death.

Police action and investigation status

Uttar Pradesh Police immediately initiated a multi-team investigation to track down those responsible, using mobile phone location data and vehicle registration records. Senior officers confirmed that technical surveillance placed the suspects' mobile signals in the Jahanabad area of neighbouring Fatehpur district.

Police have taken two suspects into custody while officers analyse footage from more than a dozen CCTV cameras along the route. Two video clips recovered by investigators show the vehicle travelling at high speed with the victim trapped on the roof.

Police confirmed that all allegations made by the family are being probed thoroughly, with dedicated police teams deployed to apprehend the remaining suspects involved in the assault.
