Three killed and one critically injured after speeding BMW plunges off Mumbai Coastal Road

What happened

On Sunday morning, approximately 5:20 a.m., a BMW carrying four students travelled north‑bound from Marine Drive toward Haji Ali on the Mumbai Coastal Road. Near Lotus Jetty, opposite Lala Lajpat Rai College, the driver lost control, slammed into the outer wall and the car fell roughly 75 feet off the elevated bridge, police said.

Who were the victims

Three of the occupants died at Nair Hospital. The deceased have been identified as 21‑year‑old Shanay Gajjal and 17‑year‑old Dhirya Seth; a third male, estimated to be about 25, has not yet been named. The fourth occupant, a male aged around 20‑23, survived with severe injuries and remains in critical condition. The Indian Express names him as 23‑year‑old Aditya Oswal, while Hindustan Times reports a 20‑year‑old Onmy Aditya Oswal – both sources agree he is the passenger seated beside the driver.

Police response

Senior Inspector Meena Jagtap of Tardeo police station said, “It appears that the car was travelling at a very high speed. Due to the speed, the driver lost control of the vehicle.” The driver, identified as 21‑year‑old Sanay Gijjar (also reported as Sanay Gujjar), was taken into custody at the scene. Police have launched a formal inquiry and are recording statements from families and witnesses. The Coastal Road Control Room confirmed the loss of control occurred near Lotus Jetty.

Preliminary findings point to overspeeding as the primary cause. The BMW, owned by the driver’s family, reportedly hit the outer wall before plunging. The crash underscores concerns about high‑speed traffic on the 10.58‑km coastal freeway, which links Marine Drive to the Worli end of the Bandra‑Worli Sea Link.

Aftermath

All four occupants were rushed to the civic‑run Nair Hospital. The three deceased were declared dead on arrival; the critically injured passenger remains in the trauma ward. Relatives of the victims have gathered in Mumbai while parents travel from Gujarat. The incident has prompted renewed calls for stricter speed monitoring on the newly opened coastal corridor.
