What happened at the Tamil Nadu Police Academy?

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay has reviewed the passing out parade of the 14th batch of directly recruited Deputy Superintendent of Police trainees at the state police academy in Chennai.

The Chief Minister inspected the parade and received the salute at the Tamil Nadu Police Academy in Oonamancherry on Wednesday, October 7, 2026. During the ceremony, he distributed medals and trophies to the graduating officers, presenting the prestigious Sword of Honour to Aaneesh Pradeep. Pradeep, who was named the best all-round trainee officer, also led the parade as its commander.

Who are the new police officers?

A total of 25 directly recruited officers successfully completed their course and passed out of the academy. The cohort reflects a continuing trend of highly qualified professionals entering the state's police leadership, consisting of 14 men and 11 women. Among them, 16 are engineering graduates, five hold postgraduate degrees, and four are graduates in other disciplines.

The ceremony at Oonamancherry marks the formal entry of these 25 officers into the upper tiers of the state's police administration. Directly recruited Deputy Superintendents of Police represent a critical supervisory layer in the state force, often serving as the primary law enforcement authorities in police subdivisions. This makes their year-long training, especially in modern technical and investigative fields, a major factor in how local policing is conducted across Tamil Nadu.

What did the training involve?

The new officers are entering active service after a comprehensive preparation programme. Director General of Police and Head of Police Force Mahesh Kumar Aggarwal said the recruits underwent 52 weeks of rigorous training. Their curriculum was designed to balance classroom legal education with demanding physical drills.

The academic side of their instruction focused on criminal law, special laws, investigation procedures, and internal security. The trainees were also briefed on emerging policing challenges and taught how to handle modern security equipment. In the field, the 52-week course took the recruits through specialised field exercises, jungle warfare, marine rescue, and scuba diving.

Speaking to the graduating batch, Rajeev Kumar, the Director General of Police for Training and director-in-charge of the academy, drew on his own extensive career in various positions across the country. He urged the new officers to exercise extreme caution and responsibility while on duty, noting the complex environment they will manage as deputy superintendents.

The passing out parade attracted several high-profile state leaders. Alongside Chief Minister Vijay, the event was attended by Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly Speaker J.C.D. Prabhakar and several state ministers. Senior bureaucrats were also present, including Chief Secretary M. Sai Kumar and K. Manivasan, the Additional Chief Secretary for Home, Prohibition, and Excise, as well as several other elected representatives.
