The Uttarakhand State Disaster Response Force has become the first disaster management unit in India to receive ISO 9001:2015 certification for its quality management system, setting a new benchmark for state-level emergency response standards across the country.

The international accreditation recognizes the force's operational efficiency, adherence to systematic standard operating procedures, structured record-keeping, and resource readiness. Officials said the benchmark will help streamline training, equipment maintenance, and operational procedures during rapid rescue missions.

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami commended the force on achieving the milestone, pointing to its discipline and dedication in protecting lives across the disaster-prone Himalayan region.

"This reflects the force’s operational efficiency, discipline, and commitment to quality in the field of disaster management," Chief Minister Dhami said. "I am confident that the SDRF will continue to serve with the same level of promptness and dedication in the future."

High operational readiness in a vulnerable terrain

Uttarakhand presents complex operational challenges, given its vulnerability to landslides, extreme rainfall, cloudbursts, flash floods, avalanches, and severe road accidents in steep terrain. To maintain continuous readiness, more than 40 SDRF teams are stationed on 24-hour standby across strategic locations in all 13 districts of the state.

Officials noted that formal ISO certification will systematically address operational gaps, refine resource allocation, and strengthen overall emergency response times.

Audit and certification process

The Bureau of Indian Standards conducted the comprehensive audit at the SDRF Battalion Headquarters in Jolly Grant between 23 and 25 September 2026.

The evaluation was led by Vishnu Gupta, former Scientist ‘G’ and Deputy Director General at the Bureau of Indian Standards, alongside SDRF Commandant Arpan Yaduvanshi. Auditors inspected administrative systems, resource deployment, training documentation, and compliance with operational protocols.

Following the final assessment, the ISO 9001:2015 certification was officially issued to the Uttarakhand SDRF on 8 October 2026.
