Climate-tech startup Acres ClimateTech has announced a major expansion of its carbon removal operations, led by plans to establish one of Jharkhand's largest high-capacity biochar production facilities. The move comes as global voluntary and compliance carbon markets face increasing pressure to address transparency gaps, weak benefit quantification, and data fragmentation in natural carbon projects.

To bridge this trust deficit, Acres ClimateTech has built an integrated intelligence platform designed to operationalise three distinct carbon removal pathways: Biochar & Pyrolysis, Enhanced Rock Weathering (ERW), and Regenerative Agriculture. Driven by a founding and technology team that includes IIT Madras alumni alongside experienced operators from BITS Pilani and Mu Sigma, the company is deploying end-to-end technology solutions to deliver durable, verifiable carbon credits.

Solving the carbon market trust gap

Global climate finance has encountered persistent structural challenges, particularly around flawed project design, high deployment costs, and difficulties in proving permanence. With roughly 40 per cent of the world's land suffering from degradation, corporate buyers are increasingly seeking verifiable carbon credits that eliminate greenwashing.

To ensure data integrity, Acres ClimateTech utilizes a proprietary tech stack featuring a hyperlocal origination engine, automated digital Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification (dMRV), AI/ML data fusion, and blockchain traceability. The platform integrates inputs from satellites, drones, and ground sensors, converting raw agronomic data into finance-ready carbon offsets.

Building Jharkhand's premier biochar facility

As part of its growth strategy, Acres ClimateTech is laying the groundwork for a major biochar facility in Jharkhand. The initiative deploys both decentralized and industrial pyrolysis units to convert agricultural waste into stable biochar, permanently isolating atmospheric carbon.

The resulting biochar is returned to local farmlands alongside essential nutrients. This localized dual-benefit model drives down the cost per tonne of carbon dioxide removed while improving long-term soil productivity by up to 25 per cent, providing tangible agronomic benefits to rural agrarian communities.

Multi-pathway architecture for carbon removal

Unlike developers focused on a single carbon offset mechanism, Acres ClimateTech uses a multi-pathway strategy to scale operations across diverse agricultural landscapes:

Carbon PathwayCore Technology & ProcessPrimary Environmental & Agronomic Impact
Biochar & PyrolysisDecentralized & industrial pyrolysis unitsPermanent carbon locking; boosts soil productivity up to 25%
Enhanced Rock Weathering (ERW)Basalt dust spreading on croplandsAccelerated chemical CO2 locking into stable carbonates
Regenerative AgricultureAlternate wetting and drying (AWD) in rice paddiesDirect methane emission suppression and water optimization

Leadership and strategic guidance

Acres ClimateTech is led by Founder and Chief Executive Officer Rakesh Mahanty alongside Co-founder and Chief Operating Officer Anurag Dalmia. Technical development is directed by IIT Madras alumni, supported by team members with backgrounds from BITS Pilani and Mu Sigma.

To guide its deployment strategy and scientific methodology, the company maintains an advisory board comprising academic and strategic experts from XLRI and Mississippi State University. As corporate demand for verified carbon removal grows globally, Acres ClimateTech aims to provide the scalable, data-driven architecture required by modern carbon markets.
