Banarasi culinary brand Banaraswala has raised $2 million in seed funding from Prax Impex Private Limited to expand its store network and franchise operations across the country.

The capital infusion will support the brand's target of reaching 50 outlets by March 2027, scaling beyond its current presence in the national capital into Tier 2 cities across northern and western India. Alongside network expansion, the funds will go toward kitchen operations, staff recruitment and broadening its menu of heritage recipes.

Founded by Vibhanshu Mishra, the chain operates under the brand motto "Ghat Se Ghar Tak" and serves traditional Varanasi food, including regional sweets, chaats and set meals. The dining concept incorporates traditional earthenware and eco-friendly serviceware, serving tea and food in terracotta kulhads and broadleaf pattal plates.

Growth roadmap and city rollout

Banaraswala currently runs three dining locations across Delhi while selling on major online food delivery platforms. The company plans immediate openings across several regional commercial hubs, including Banswara in Rajasthan, Sarangpur in Gujarat, and Farrukhabad and Fatehpur in Uttar Pradesh during October and November 2026.

The planned network will combine company-owned stores with franchise-operated locations. The rollout forms part of a wider trend in India's organised food-service industry, where domestic culinary traditions are taking root in modern retail spaces and connecting regional gastronomy with urban consumer demand.

"Scaling Banaraswala is, at the same time, an effort to expand our presence and build trust in the initial ethos of the brand," said founder Vibhanshu Mishra. "The challenges faced by us have brought valuable lessons. This phase is a comeback, which has a renewed sense of purpose with a clear intent on moving ahead. We seek to take the flavours and recipes of Banaras to an untapped marketplace without deviating from their authentic nature."

Institutional backing for domestic brands

Investor interest in regional domestic dining concepts has strengthened as consumer appetite for indigenous flavours grows across both metros and developing non-metro centres.

Rajnandini, a shareholder at Prax Impex Private Limited, said the investment decision reflected the potential of backing established cultural culinary traditions with scalable retail discipline.

"What stood out to us about Banaraswala was the opportunity to build a modern food brand around something that already has deep cultural relevance," Rajnandini said. "Vibhanshu has an impressive understanding of numbers and the market, and we believe the brand can move beyond being a regional food business to becoming a recognisable Indian food brand."

In addition to setting up quick-service restaurant formats and dining outlets, Banaraswala intends to experiment with modern culinary techniques, including Banarasi molecular cuisine formats, while maintaining the regional authenticity that anchors its core menu.
