Hurricane Isaias targets Gulf Coast

Hurricane Isaias, a Category 2 storm packing 100mph winds, is bearing down on the northern US Gulf Coast. The storm is expected to make landfall late on Friday night or early Saturday morning, bringing what forecasters warned could be a "life-threatening" storm surge, damaging winds, and up to 15 inches of rain.

Millions of residents from Louisiana to Florida are under weather warnings. Governors in Florida, Alabama, and Georgia have declared states of emergency, while local officials have ordered evacuations in several low-lying coastal counties.

The National Weather Service said on Thursday evening that Isaias was centred in the Gulf of Mexico, roughly 260 miles south of the mouth of the Mississippi River, moving northeast at 14mph. The storm is the first hurricane of the 2026 Atlantic season, tying a record set in 1905 for the latest first hurricane of the year.

Evacuations and emergency declarations

In Florida, Governor Ron DeSantis declared a state of emergency for 25 counties, warning that the storm could reach Category 3 strength before landfall. "Execute your plan now if you're in that area," DeSantis said at a press conference on Thursday afternoon. "There will be impacts."

Mandatory and voluntary evacuation orders have been issued for low-lying and coastal areas in Florida's Escambia, Okaloosa, Walton, and Franklin counties. In Escambia County, authorities opened eight sites for residents to fill sandbags, while local businesses in downtown Pensacola boarded up windows.

Alabama Governor Kay Ivey declared a state of emergency for 40 counties, and Georgia Governor Brian Kemp issued a similar order for all 159 of his state's counties, urging residents to stock up on food, water, and batteries.

Storm surge and wind warnings

A storm surge warning is in force from the mouth of the Mississippi River to the Suwannee River in Florida. This warning indicates a danger of life-threatening flooding as rising Gulf waters push inland.

A hurricane warning spans from Ocean Springs, Mississippi, to the Bay and Gulf county line in the Florida Panhandle. Forecasters warned that the region should prepare for long-duration power outages as high winds topple trees and down power lines.

While Isaias is moving over exceptionally warm Gulf waters—conditions that typically fuel rapid intensification—forecasters expect it to encounter strong wind shear as it nears the coast on Friday. This wind shear should curb its strength slightly, meaning it is most likely to make landfall as a Category 1 or 2 hurricane. However, the Weather Company warned that a minor drop in wind speed right before landfall "will do little to diminish the storm's impacts".

Infrastructure and travel disruptions

The approaching storm has already begun shutting down transport and daily life across the region. Several school districts in Alabama and Florida have cancelled Friday classes, and Florida State University is closing its Tallahassee campus.

Air travel is also severely affected. Destin-Fort Walton Beach Airport closed on Thursday night, while Pensacola International Airport announced plans to suspend commercial flights on Friday morning. The Federal Aviation Administration warned of potential oceanic route closures in the Gulf, and Amtrak has suspended its Mardi Gras and Crescent passenger rail services through the weekend.

Beyond the coast, the storm's remnants are expected to bring heavy rain and high winds inland across the wider Southeast, the Tennessee Valley, and parts of the Ohio Valley over the weekend.
