US strikes Iranian anti-aircraft facility on Qeshm Island, Trump confirms
American forces targeted a missile battery on the strategic island ahead of US midterm elections as indirect nuclear negotiations continue in Qatar.
The United States military has launched limited strikes against an Iranian anti-aircraft facility on Qeshm Island in the Strait of Hormuz, US officials and President Donald Trump have confirmed.
Trump described the overnight operation as a minor defensive attack, stating that American forces targeted a newly built missile battery after Iranian units fired on US aircraft operating in the area. US Central Command confirmed the operation took place on the eve of the US midterm elections. Israeli officials denied any involvement in the raid.
Iranian state media reported explosions on Qeshm Island, while the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps stated that its air defence forces had shot down two American MQM-170 drones south of the island and an MQ-9 drone east of the strait. Iranian deputy foreign minister Kazem Gharibabadi insisted Tehran retained the right to self-defence, stating that foreign aggression against the country had not ceased.
Key diplomatic positions
| Issue | US position | Iranian position |
|---|---|---|
| Military actions | Describes Qeshm strike as limited self-defence | Demands complete termination of foreign military strikes |
| Strait of Hormuz | Demands guaranteed international maritime passage | Offers to end blockade within two days of economic relief |
| Sanctions & assets | Insists on prior nuclear commitments | Demands immediate asset unfreezing and oil export clearance |
The military action comes during active indirect diplomatic talks mediated by Qatar and Pakistan aimed at preventing further military escalation and reopening the Strait of Hormuz, through which approximately a fifth of global oil and gas shipments usually pass.
Qatari foreign ministry spokesman Majed al-Ansari stated in Doha that both sides remain committed to negotiations and are reviewing proposals exchanged in real time. However, Mohsen Rezaei, secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, cautioned that Washington's latest response failed to fully address Tehran's seven core requirements, which include lifting the naval blockade and releasing frozen assets abroad.
Speaking in Washington, Trump played down the broader economic impact of the conflict while hinting that the US could still target Pickaxe Mountain, a fortified underground Iranian nuclear site, claiming such an operation could be completed swiftly if indirect diplomatic efforts fail.
