Caleb Flynn sentenced to life without parole for wife Ashley's murder
The former American Idol contestant staged a burglary after shooting 37-year-old Ashley Flynn at their Ohio home.

Former American Idol contestant and church pastor Caleb Flynn has been sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for murdering his wife, Ashley, at their home in Ohio.
A jury convicted the 40-year-old of aggravated murder, felonious assault and tampering with evidence following a trial that laid bare his secret affair with a church intern and a fabricated burglary story.
Ashley Flynn, 37, a schoolteacher and volleyball coach, was found shot dead in February at the couple's home in Tipp City, north of Dayton. Flynn called 911 to report that an intruder had broken in and killed her while he slept. The couple's two young daughters were inside the house when police arrived.
What happened on the night of the shooting
Prosecutors argued that Flynn decided to kill his wife to start a new life with Alleigha Botner, a former intern and worship leader at his church. Botner testified that their affair began in 2022 and lasted more than a year. She told the court that Flynn had repeatedly expressed hatred for his wife and talked about wanting her dead.
The night before the shooting, Flynn sent Botner a text message that became central to the state's case: "I choose you. I'm free. Actions will come tomorrow."
Jurors also heard AI-generated love songs Flynn had produced for Botner. While the murder weapon was never recovered, data from Flynn's digital devices contradicted his claim that he was asleep, showing movement around the house during the critical window. Investigators also linked his fingerprints and DNA to the scene.
Flynn did not take the stand during the trial. Defence lawyers argued that there was no forensic proof he had fired a gun that morning, pointing out that no firearm residue was found on him.
The sentence and courtroom reaction
Before Miami County Common Pleas Judge Jeannine Pratt delivered the sentence, Flynn addressed the court in tears. He apologised to his family and his daughters, admitting he had broken his marital vows and lied repeatedly, but maintained he was not the killer.
"As I stand here before God, who is my ultimate judge, I am not lying when I say I did not kill my wife," Flynn said.
Judge Pratt said she was disturbed by the way Flynn used his religious faith and pastoral role to disguise his actions. She handed down the maximum term of life imprisonment with no chance of parole.
Flynn first gained public attention in 2013 when he auditioned for American Idol before judges Mariah Carey, Randy Jackson and Nicki Minaj. During that broadcast, he credited his wife with encouraging him to pursue his musical ambitions. He received a golden ticket to Hollywood but did not make the main competition.
Ashley Flynn's family welcomed the sentence as a measure of accountability for her death. Flynn's defence team has indicated it intends to lodge an appeal.
