Meerut man arrested after dragging wife on car bonnet after she caught him with girlfriend

A dispute over an alleged extramarital affair turned violent in Meerut on Saturday evening, ending with a woman clinging to the bonnet of a moving SUV as her husband tried to drive away.

Police have arrested the husband, Mayank Singh, and his companion, Mahi Verma, after a video of the confrontation went viral on social media. Mayank now faces charges of attempted murder.

The confrontation over momos

The incident began when Sunita Singh spotted her husband's car parked on a street in Meerut. Inside, Mayank was eating momos with Mahi, whom police described as his alleged girlfriend.

When Sunita approached the vehicle and confronted them, a heated argument broke out. Sunita began banging heavily on the car windows, demanding that her husband open the doors. Instead of stepping out, Mayank locked the vehicle from the inside and started the engine to flee the scene.

In a bid to stop him from driving off, Sunita stepped directly in front of the car and lay across the bonnet. Mayank did not stop. He accelerated, carrying his wife on the hood of the vehicle for about 100 metres down the road.

Caught on camera

The dramatic scene was captured on video by onlookers. The footage, which has since circulated widely online, shows Sunita holding on tightly to the moving car while screaming for help. "Brother, save me... Brother, help," she cried out to bystanders in Hindi.

A crowd of local residents quickly gathered and blocked the car's path, forcing Mayank to finally bring the vehicle to a halt.

Legal action and police response

Following the confrontation, Sunita filed a formal complaint with the police. In addition to the driving incident, her complaint accuses her husband of assault, infidelity, and dowry harassment.

Lohianagar police have seized the vehicle involved, a Toyota Urban Cruiser Taisor with the registration number UP15ER3086. Both Mayank and Mahi remain in custody.

Sangram Singh, the Circle Officer for Kotwali, said that Mayank's actions went far beyond a domestic dispute. "Following a verbal altercation, the man attempted to run over his wife with the intent to kill her," he said.

Police are now examining the video footage and interviewing witnesses as part of their ongoing investigation.
